pLike so many young NHL players, Blue Jackets goaltender Steve Mason had to learn the hard way that nothing at hockey's highest level comes easy./p pMason, who won the Calder Trophy (top rookie) and finished second for the Vezina Trophy (top goaltender) in 2008-09, endured the mother of all sophomore slumps last season. He was one of many young Blue Jackets players who underperformed in what turned out to be a disastrous season./p pWhat's changed?/p pMason said he spent the summer of 2008 rehabbing a knee injury, which precluded him from taking part in a vigorous offseason conditioning program like most players. What followed was a rookie season for the record books./p p"I figured I could take the same approach (before last season)," Mason told The Columbus Dispatch.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed center Ryan Johansen to a standard three-year entry level contract. General manager Scott Howson announced on Thursday the deal with the 18-year-old Johansen, who was taken fourth overall in last summer's draft. He scored 25 goals and had 44 assists in 71 games with Portland of the Western Hockey League during the 2009-10 season.
