MLB Power Poll: Sins of the Padres (SportingNews.com)
Tue, 07 Sep 2010 09:14:00 PDT
It's impossible to talk about the San Diego Padres' 2010 season without using some variation of the word "surprise." As in, they were surprisingly good for so long that it's pretty surprising they've fallen so quickly. On Aug. 26, they had 76 victories and were -- surprisingly (OK, shockingly) -- tied with the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays in the loss column in the race for baseball's best record. When Labor Day arrived, they still had 76 victories.

Only six times since the break has Valverde notched a scoreless appearance. He has a 7.29 ERA in the season's second half./p p"I'm not concerned about Valverde at all," manager Jim Leyland said. "He's our closer."/p pHe might not be if Detroit had a viable alternative. Or if Valverde were not under contract for next season./p pLeyland is nothing if not loyal to his players, but Valverde could use some time to get straightened out so he can feel good about himself going into...
